Sure, we all know where we spend our money, but are we really attentive to our expenses? Making a budget helps you be fully aware of your spendings. Try taking note of ALL your expenditures for 30 days straight, leave nothing out, even the five cent candy you buy for your children.
When you tally ALL of your expenses after 30 days, the sum will leave you spellbound. If you take a good look at your monthly expenses and pinpoint the extras you could go without, and then multiply this over a year, you get the amount which you could be saving right now. Just imagine having this money at your disposal or working for you in the bank. This is a good incentive to make a summary of your intended expenditures along with proposals for how to meet them.
Drafting a budget is important to make you realize that even the slightest expense will make a difference at the end of the year. Take for example, if you spend $1 on a daily newspaper, this will translate into $7 or $9 a week since it is more expensive on weekends. Although $9 a week may not seem much, but if you multiply it by 52 weeks, you get $468. This is how much you could have saved in one year, if you read the news on the Internet instead of buying the newspaper. This is almost $500!!
Of course, this is but ONE example, if buying your daily newspaper is important for you, then it is okay. I'm not saying not to buy the newspaper; this is just to illustrate how you can save a substantial amount of money without much deprivation. I'm sure you can come up with a few more expenses which you can reduce.
Your measures to save money don't have to be drastic. It all depends how fast and determined you want to put some savings aside. Whether you want to get out of debt or stash some cash for a family treat, it is time to set your financials straight and make a budget.
